In addition to our environmental coverage elsewhere, the Great Barrier Reef is also the subject of geo-political tensions between Australia and China as to its current ecological state. The 21-nation World Heritage Committee under the chairmanship of China's Vice-Minister for Education, Tian Xuejan, has declared the reef officially 'in danger' providing a direct threat to Australia's economy in lost jobs and revenues.
The Australian government has told the committee that while climate change is a clear threat to the reef, they are doing more to improve its long-term health than ever before.
